What was it about the industry that attracted you to banking?
I graduated with a degree in marketing. What I like about marketing is that it involves multiple disciplines focused on understanding and communicating with people, and banking is a people business. I also like being in retail banking because it’s like being an entrepreneur and growing your own business.
What kind of charitable organizations have you devoted your time to?
Community organizations understand that the economic vitality and energy in any community lies with youth. It’s critical that we provide the resources, guidance and empowerment to young people so they can make positive changes in society. I have two sons, both from the Millennial generation. Watching them grow up, you realize they are engines of strength: They dream big, exert endless energy, carry optimism and want to save the world. So, participating with organizations that support the development of youth is important to me.
What’s your approach to innovation and how much of it has to do with “blue sky thinking?”
I try to create a culture of doing things differently. I like to think of ways to provide a better customer experience [and to] make it unique and not just a transaction. CB&T has already set the groundwork, in which we take the time to listen and gain an understanding of client needs. With that in mind, I look to the banker to allow their personality be the driver. How they create that memorable experience I leave to their creativity.
I enjoy "blue sky" discussions, but I also try to gain an understanding of the bigger picture. I’m a big fan of accountability — and with accountability it’s about the journey to achieve the desired results. To get there, it’s alright to do things differently, but it needs to be practical and actionable by your team.
What banking innovations have you seen over the years and have any surprised you?
I think the speedy acceptance of digital banking has surprised me.
There’s been a transformation to digital banking and an increasing expectation for immediate payment. Real-time payment apps such as Venmo have brought greater efficiency in moving money from person to person.
The pandemic has also brought greater use of treasury platforms, such as our Treasury Management Select for Businesses and DPX-Deluxe Payment Exchange to move money more efficiently. Mobile banking, e-bill payments, and online loan applications are quickly becoming the preferred way to bank, particularly for Generations X and Y.
What activities do you enjoy? What keeps you going?
I enjoy reading non-fiction, listening to podcasts, watching movies, gardening and watching local sports. And having family keeps me going. My sons and I often have discussions about problems and possible solutions — that “blue sky” thinking again. I also gain strength by being involved with nonprofit organizations because the end results raise my spirits and give me hope.
